Nomos Returns to Watches & Wonders 2026 with the Tangente Neomatik 38 Update

Nomos Returns to Watches & Wonders 2026 with the Tangente Neomatik 38 Update

Nomos Glashütte unveiled the Tangente Neomatik 38 Update on April 14, 2026, at Watches & Wonders in Geneva, introducing a more compact and considered evolution of its signature model.

This latest update builds on a concept first introduced in 2018, when Nomos debuted the Tangente Neomatik Update with its now-signature peripheral “ring date” display. That circular date indication quickly became one of the brand’s most recognizable technical features, offering a clean way to integrate a date without disrupting the dial.

In 2024, the brand arrived with a series of 38mm Tangente Date models in a wide range of colors, each limited and distinctly expressive. It took a different direction but remained rooted in the same design language.

The new Tangente Neomatik 38 Update begins with revised proportions and a shift in materials.

Three new references are launched in Tangente Neomatik 38 Update for 2026. The stainless steel model is reference 180, joined by two versions in 18k yellow gold: reference 195 and reference 196, the latter presented as the Doré.

Read further to explore what sets each reference apart, from design details to wearability, and to understand everything that’s new in this latest Tangente Neomatik 38 Update.

What's New Across All Three References

The 2026 Tangente Neomatik 38 Update introduces three changes that apply across all versions: refined case proportions, a movement adapted for the smaller diameter, and the introduction of 18k gold to the collection.

The Size: From 40.5mm to 38.5mm

The original Tangente Neomatik 41 Update, introduced in 2018, measured 40.5mm in diameter. For a watch with the Tangente's signature long lugs, this created a wrist presence that exceeded the nominal case size. The angular lugs extend the visual footprint significantly, making the 40.5mm version wear larger than its dimensions suggest.

The new Tangente Neomatik 38 Update measures 38.5mm in diameter and 7.4mm in height. This places it squarely in the 37-39mm range that many consider ideal for dress watches. The reduced diameter makes the watch more versatile across different wrist sizes without compromising the design's architectural clarity. At 7.4mm thick, it maintains the slim profile expected of a modern dress watch while housing a full-automatic movement with complications.

Movement: The Award-Winning DUW 6101 (Refined)

All three versions of the Tangente Neomatik 38 Update are powered by the DUW 6101, Nomos's in-house automatic caliber developed specifically for the ring date complication.

The DUW 6101 runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. It features bidirectional winding, a quick-set date function that works both forward and backward, and the Nomos Swing System escapement.

The movement measures 3.6mm in height and is adjusted in six positions. Traditional Glashütte finishing includes a three-quarter plate, perlage, ribbing, and blued screws, all visible through the sapphire display caseback.

The peripheral date display remains the caliber's defining feature. Two red markers on a rotating disk beneath the dial indicate the current date on a scale printed along the dial's perimeter. This eliminates the need for a traditional date window, preserving the dial's visual continuity. For the 38.5mm case, the movement was refined to maintain the date ring's proportions and legibility.

Nomos's "Golden Age" Strategy

The Tangente Neomatik 38 Update in gold is part of Nomos's broader expansion into precious-metal cases across multiple collections.

The introduction of 18k gold to the Tangente Update expands the collection's formal appeal while maintaining the design principles established in 2018. For context on Nomos's position in the collector market, see our analysis of Nomos watches as investments.

The gold expansion follows Nomos's established approach: refine existing designs rather than introduce entirely new complications or case shapes. The Tangente Update's smaller size and precious-metal options make it more wearable and more formal without altering its fundamental design language.

Now that you know what's new, let's get into the details of what each reference represents in the full breakdown.

Reference 195: Tangente Gold Neomatik 38 Update

Case and Dial

Reference 195 uses an 18k yellow gold case measuring 38.5mm in diameter and 7.4mm in height. The case construction follows the Tangente's established architecture: angular lugs, flat bezel, polished surfaces. A sapphire crystal covers the front, and the display caseback reveals the DUW 6101 movement through another sapphire window. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters.

The dial is silver-plated white with printed black numerals and indices. Blued steel hands mark hours, minutes, and small seconds. The seconds subdial sits at 6 o'clock. Two red markers on the peripheral date ring indicate the current date along the outer scale. The layout remains identical to the steel version, with the blue hands providing the only color accent against the white dial.

Strap

Nomos fits Reference 195 with a Horween Shell Cordovan leather strap in black, secured by a gold tang buckle. The standard lug width allows for strap changes. Nomos offers several factory options, including additional Shell Cordovan colors and textile straps for those preferring a more casual appearance.

Gold Case

Reference 195 marks the first time the Tangente Update has been offered in precious metal since the complication debuted in 2018. The original launch included only stainless steel. The 2026 introduction brings 18k gold to the collection while preserving the blue hands that defined the Update's aesthetic from the start. The gold case adds weight and formality without changing the dial design or movement specification.

Reference 196: Tangente Gold Neomatik 38 Update "Doré"

Case and Dial

Reference 196 shares the same 18k yellow gold case as Reference 195: 38.5mm diameter, 7.4mm height, angular lugs, sapphire crystals front and back, 50 meters water resistance. The case finishing and construction remain identical between the two gold versions.

The dial differs in one specific detail. Where Reference 195 uses blued steel hands, Reference 196 employs gold-tone hands. The hour, minute, and small seconds hands are finished in a warm gold color that matches the case material. This creates a monochromatic appearance across the dial and case, with less visual contrast than the blue-handed version.

The rest of the dial stays consistent: silver-plated white surface, printed black numerals, small seconds at 6 o'clock, peripheral date ring with red markers. The dial layout and typography match both Reference 195 and the steel version. Only the hand finish changes.

Strap Options

Nomos equips Reference 196 with Horween Shell Cordovan leather in black, paired with a gold tang buckle. The same strap options available for Reference 195 apply here: alternative Shell Cordovan colors or textile straps, depending on preference.

The Doré Character

The gold hands shift the watch's visual balance considerably. With blued hands, Reference 195 draws the eye to the time display through color contrast. Reference 196 reduces that contrast, creating a warmer, more unified appearance between dial and case.

This isn't merely an aesthetic preference. The choice between blue and gold hands changes how the watch reads in different lighting and on different wrist sizes. The gold hands blend more subtly with formal attire, while the blue hands maintain better legibility in low-light conditions.

Both versions use identical cases, movements, and dial layouts. The hand finish alone distinguishes Reference 196 from Reference 195, making it one of the more straightforward choices in the collection: contrast versus cohesion, blue versus gold.

Steel Versions: Tangente Neomatik 38 Update Reference 147 and Reference 148

Case and Dial Options

The steel versions use stainless steel cases at 38.5mm diameter and 7.4mm height. Both references follow the same case architecture: angular lugs, flat bezel, polished surfaces. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters. Each reference offers two caseback options: sapphire crystal for viewing the movement, or solid stainless steel.

Reference 147 features a white silver-plated dial with printed black numerals and indices. The hands are finished in polished black rather than the blued steel typically seen on Nomos watches. Hour, minute, and small seconds hands all carry this black finish. The seconds subdial sits at 6 o'clock. The peripheral date ring uses two red markers to indicate the current date along the outer scale.

Reference 148 introduces a forest green dial with the same layout and black hands. The green surface creates a different visual character while maintaining the monochromatic hand-to-dial relationship. Both steel references avoid the traditional blue hands found on most Tangente models, opting instead for the more contemporary black finish.

Strap Options

Nomos fits both steel versions with Horween Shell Cordovan leather in black, closed with a stainless steel tang buckle. The standard lug width accepts alternative straps. Nomos offers additional Shell Cordovan colors and textile options for those preferring different combinations.

Dial Color and Hand Finish

The original 2018 Tangente Neomatik 41 Update came exclusively in a white dial with blued steel hands at 40.5mm. The 2026 steel versions introduce two dial colors at the new 38.5mm size: white and forest green, both paired with polished black hands.

The switch from blue to black hands reduces visual contrast, creating a more restrained appearance. The forest green dial adds a color option not previously available in the Update collection, while the white dial maintains the classic Tangente aesthetic with the updated hand finish.

Both steel versions maintain the same movement and case construction as the gold models while offering the peripheral date complication across two distinct dial executions.
